Although I've been experimenting in Swan Bros with Google Adsense for content, Adsense for Search, Chitika, Kontera and Widgetbucks, I've never tried "Competitive Ad Filter" from Adsense at all. I've noticed the function a long time ago, but I thought it was just to block ads from your competitors.
Recently I did some research about avoiding low CPC ads, I found out how "Made For Adsense" sites are stealing traffic & revenues from genuine bloggers with their low CPC ads (too late, you might say :-p). That's how I found out AdsBlackList.com and without any hesitation I joined it, and got the list of black listed sites(MFA and low CPC) for my keywords. Then I activated "Competitive Ad Filter".
It's been only one day, so it's a bit early to say how effective it's. But I'll keep you updated with my success story (hopefully).
How about you? How have you been coping with low CPC ads?

Posted by Swanie | 27.4.09 | Blogging, Random Thoughts | 0 comments »A few weeks ago, I joined Kontera after reading positive feedback from Randy Brown. In-Text advertising was very new for me too so I thought to give it a go. It was quite easy to join although Kontera used to be available to only the sites with minimum 500,000 page views per month. I thought I was quite lucky to be able to join with small traffic.
It was easy to set up too. I just had to copy and paste the script in my template and Kontera did the rest. Within 24 hrs, I could see the in-text links showed up with double lines underneath. I was really happy... at least for a while.
After a few days later I checked the results. They are nowhere near what Adsense or Chitika offers. It's a tiny bit more than 1 cent a click. Considering the visitors "lost" to the ad sites, it's not worth running at all. So I removed the Kontera after two weeks. You might say it's too early to quit.
Kontera worked well for Rany Brown and John Chow and they recommend it a lot. However, Kontera didn't impress me at all. So bye bye, Kontera!!!
What's your experience with Kontera? Please let me know.
Blogger identified and locked Swan Bros as a spam blog
Posted by Swanie | 22.4.09 | Blogging, Blogspot, Google | 1 comments »Yesterday I received the following email from Blogger saying that they locked my blog as it has been identified as a potential spam blog!!! It really freaked me out and needless to say I was so upset with the quality of their "Automatic spam detection". When I checked in Google forum, I found out that I wasn't alone with that problem.
I totally understand Google has to fight splogs because one in every five blogs in blogspot is a spam blog. I really appreciate Google's initiative to block those splogs too. However, they should have a better detection system and they should make sure not to penalise wrong people.
Hello,
Your blog at: http://swanbros.blogspot.com/ has been identified as a potential spam blog. To correct this, please request a review by filling out the form at http://www.blogger.com/unlock-blog.g?lockedBlogID=????????
Your blog will be deleted in 20 days if it isn't reviewed, and your readers will see a warning page during this time. After we receive your request, we'll review your blog and unlock it within two business days. Once we have reviewed and determined your blog is not spam, the blog will be unlocked and the message in your Blogger dashboard will no longer be displayed. If this blog doesn't belong to you, you don't have to do anything, and any other blogs you may have won't be affected.
We find spam by using an automated classifier. Automatic spam detection is inherently fuzzy, and occasionally a blog like yours is flagged incorrectly. We sincerely apologize for this error. By using this kind of system, however, we can dedicate more storage, bandwidth, and engineering resources to bloggers like you instead of to spammers. For more information, please see Blogger Help: http://help.blogger.com/bin/answer.py?answer=42577
Thank you for your understanding and for your help with our spam-fighting efforts.
Sincerely,
The Blogger Team
P.S. Just one more reminder: Unless you request a review, your blog will be deleted in 20 days. Click this link to request the review: http://www.blogger.com/unlock-blog.g?lockedBlogID=????????
I've responded and requested a review. So far no reply yet. But I don't see the warning in my Dashboard any more, so I guess it has been fixed now. I hope they fix this problem before they annoy more users. Read More......
Review of Searchles Related Post Widget
Posted by Swanie | 13.4.09 | Blogging, Cool Stuffs | 2 comments »It has been a few weeks since I first installed Searchles related posts widget in my blog. So what is my opinion?
These are some of the features I like about Searchles Related Content Widget.
Ease of setup and configuration: It's so easy to set up. You don't need to worry about java scripts. Choose colors and size of the widget, and it's ready to go. The number of links displayed depends on the size of the widget. In comparison, it's way easier than installing Adsense (not that Adsense is hard to install).
Doesn't rely on tags/labels alone: It will work even if your site doesn't have labels/categories. I guess because Searchles scans all pages to display, it's more accurate than relying on labels.
Report for clicks : The best feature I like is I can see the report of clicks from the widget, which you can't get with other related post scripts. It's great to be able to check how many people use it to find more information. As visitors can see related information easily, it will somehow encourage them to stay around a bit longer. The disadvantage of it might be less frequent use of search box to find more information because the visitors are finding related information easier. But I'm not sure yet if that's the case.
What I am not so thrilled of
Index frequency: Although the initial indexing was pretty fast, I don't think it indexed every single post of my blog. It doesn't seem to scan frequently after that (based on the Indexed Articles stat). I hope they fix this issue to make it a perfect related post/content widget.
Overall, I'm very happy with it. I hope visitors are finding it useful too.
How To Install & Customise Classic Adsense for Google Search Box
Posted by Swanie | 4.4.09 | Blogging, Google | 2 comments »It has been a while since Google upgraded its Adsense for Google Search. The new version has improved features such as
- you can add keywords to target particular ads and results,
- you can manage the search box through "Manage Ads" sub-tab and
- you can select where you want your ads to appear on your search results pages.

But I still prefer the classic Google Search for Adsense because visitors can select if they want to search your site or the web. I think it's important to give the visitors that option. Besides, adding keywords might bring up unrelevant ads and search results, which can annoy users. That's why I decided to stick to the classic version.

Unfortunately you can no longer get the classic search box from Adsense. You need to copy the script below and replace codes in red with your details.
<!-- Search Google -->
<form action='http://www.google.com/custom' method='get' target='google_window'>
<table bgcolor='#ffffff' border='0'>
<tr><td align='left' height='32' nowrap='nowrap' valign='top'>

<label for='sbi' style='display: none'>Enter your search terms</label>
<input id='sbi' maxlength='255' name='q' size='31' type='text' value=''/>

<td>
<input id='ss0' name='sitesearch' type='radio' value=''/>
<label for='ss0' title='Search the Web'><font color='#000000' size='-1'>Web</font></label></td>
<td>
<input checked='1' id='ss1' name='sitesearch' type='radio' value='YOURSITE'/>

</tr>
</table>
<label for='sbb' style='display: none'>Submit search form</label>

<input name='client' type='hidden' value='YOUR-ADSENSE-PUBLISHER-CODE'/>
<input name='forid' type='hidden' value='1'/>
<input name='channel' type='hidden' value='SEARCH-CHANNEL-ID'/>
<input name='ie' type='hidden' value='ISO-8859-1'/>
<input name='oe' type='hidden' value='ISO-8859-1'/>
<input name='cof' type='hidden' value='GALT:#008000;GL:1;DIV:#336699;VLC:663399;AH:center;BGC:FFFFFF;LBGC:336699;ALC:0000FF;LC:0000FF;T:000000;GFNT:0000FF;GIMP:0000FF;LH:50;LW:272;L:YOUR-LOGO-URL;S: YOURSITE;FORID:1'/>
<input name='hl' type='hidden' value='en'/>
</td></tr></table>
</form>
<!-- End Search Google -->
- Firstly save your blog template
- Copy the script in the text box
- Go to "Page Elements" sub-tab under "Layout" tab
- Click "Add a Gadget" in desired panel and choose "HTML/JAVASCRIPT" (You can give a name for the widget if you like)
- Paste the script and change the codes in red with your site's URL, search Channel ID, Adsense publisher number, etc
- Save and test it
You can also customise the search results page by changing the codes in blue. Below is what each term means.
GALT = URL COLOUR
DIV = BORDER COLOUR
VLC = VISITED URL COLOUR
BGC = BACKGROUND COLOUR
LBG = LOGO BACKGROUND COLOUR
ALC = LIGHT URL (BUT I'M NOT SO SURE)
T = TEXT COLOUR
GFNT = SIMILAR PAGES AND MORE RESULTS LINKS COLOUR
GIMP = GOOGLE ADSENSE LABEL COLOUR (ADS BY GOOGLE)
LH = LOGO HEIGHT
LW = LOGO WIDTH
If you don't want to use your own logo in the result page, you can remove the logo portion shown below from the script.
The Best Related Posts Widget for Your Blog!!!
Posted by Swanie | 21.3.09 | Blogging, Useful Links | 3 comments »Today I found Searchles Platform when I was looking for a widget for related posts. As soon as I read about their "related posts" widget or "related content widget", I was hooked.I've been looking for a related posts widget to install in my blog. But I found some javascript widgets only that use labels to look for related posts. Although it may be better than not having anything at all, I am not 100% impressed with the idea of using labels for that. If I want to use it, I will have to stop using generic labels such as "tips". Another downside is I would need some tweaking with the scripts and they may not work well.
On the other hand, Searchles' related posts widget doesn't require any tweaking from my side except choosing colours, sizes, etc. Besides they don't use labels or tags. They determine relevancy by spidering your site's content. It works pretty well as you can see in the picture below. The best thing is you can get stats about visits from related post links.
Here is how they describe the Searchles Discovery Platform.
The Searchles Discovery Platform is the culmination of all the Searchles/ Dumbfind technology that has been building over the years. To kick off the platform we have released a related content widget aimed at blogs and content websites looking to make their sites a bit more sticky. Over the coming months, we will be releasing more widgets to build out a suite of products designed to make your users stay put, and hopefully earn you some money along the way!
I think this is by far the best related posts widget and the easiest to install too. It's good for Blogger, Wordpress, etc and forums too.
Error message for meta tag in Blogger Beta Template
Posted by Swanie | 1.3.08 | Blogging, Blogspot | 4 comments »Layout in the Beta Blogger is quite a complicated process. It's very different from the old layout and your previous knowledge of HTML too.
This morning I wanted to add a meta tag in the new Beta. I generated the meta tag with Any Browser. But whenever I inserted the tags to the new template, it showed an error message saying "Your template could not be parsed as it is not well-formed. Please make sure all XML elements are closed properly. XML error message: The element type "meta" must be terminated by the matching end-tag "" .
After trying for many times, I found out that I needed "/>" instead of ">". Who would have thought that it was necessary? I wonder if it is part of XML, the area which is new to me.
Once-celebrated Chitika is under fire since they have disappointed most publishers with the new audit system. Some bloggers like Ingoal lost 96.28% from the audit. There are many complaints and discussions around too. According to the audit, you won't get paid for the clicks from "invalid countries" such as China and most Asian countries, and for repeated clicks from same IPs.
Fortunately, Chitika introduced "Alternate Ad" similar to Adsense. So visitors from invalid IPs will be presented with "Alternate Ad" you specified (Hopefully). This is the code you need to add to your existing Chitika code. (You can add this from Chitika if you're creating new codes.)
ch_alternate_ad_url = "XXXX";
You can add this line to the code (anywhere after the line with ch_client but before the line with /script). You need to replace the XXXX above with a valid URL like "http://yourdomain.com/alternateAd.html". The replacement Ad should be same size as the actual Chitika Ad, otherwise it will be cropped out.
But mind you, you cannot use Adsense as your alternate Ad, and this won't help you with clicks from repeated visitors :-(. I'll have to get one for my blog too.
Since I've got some problems with my blog yesterday, I've been wondering all the time "What if something goes wrong with Blogger and I lose all my post?". When I read about how LiewCF lost his previous blog (link), I didn't care that much about my blog. Now that I have experienced my first problem with Blogger, I'm very scared to lose even any of my current posts (so far about 30), let alone losing hundreds like others. Template is not a problem for me, since whenever I tweak my template a bit, I keep a backup with date, time and update descriptions.
So I searched Blogger help for how to backup all my posts, etc, and got some good news. There is a feature called "BlogSend". If you enable BlogSend, Blogger will email a post after you publish it. So with big mailboxes like Gmail, you don't need to worry about not having enough spaces for all the posts in the future.
You may be wondering what you do with all the posts in your mailbox if you lose Blogger posts. In "BlogSend", there is another feature to post from your email. That's right. You can email all the posts back to Blogger. They will be saved as "drafts", which you can publish later. I've just tested it and I'm in love with BlogSend.
If you want to enable "BlogSend",1. Go to "Settings Email"
2. Type the email address you want to send. You can send to only one address, so if you want to keep multiple backups in different email inboxes, you can use Google Groups to create a mailing list.
3. (Not compulsory until you want to restore posts.) To enable posting from email, you need to create a Blogger email address. It's in the format of "YourLogInName.SecretNameYouChoose@blogger.com".
4. Save Settings and it's all done.
Here are some of the screenshots from my test.
First I sent from my email to check how posting from an email works. As you can see pictures can be posted with email too. But if you send a picture as an attachment, Blogger won't publish it. I copied the picture and text from a web site and pasted to my email.
As soon as I published the post, a copy of the post is in another email of mine. So the post is already backed up. When you post from some emails like Yahoo, you may need to remove the ADs that come along with your email, before publishing the posts.
Unfortunately you cannot back up comments or old posts with this method yet. I'll do some research and will let you all know once I find out. Please let me know if you have any tips. Cheers!!!
Note: If anybody needs a Gmail account, just let me know. I'm happy to send the invitation.
What the hell!!! Just now I changed David Beckham's Photos in my previous post since the pics look crap. Then I republished the whole blog. And I can't see the sidebar on my Main page at all. I hate this sxxx. I have no idea what went wrong. Does anybody have any idea please??
Follow up-- Finally I had to delete that post and it's ok now. Don't know what happened? May be it didn't like making fun of DB.
How To Change Title & Filename of Your Blogger Post
Posted by Swanie | 16.11.05 | Blogging, Blogspot | 0 comments »If you have been blogging with Blogger for a while, you might have noticed that Blogger automatically names "yourpost.html" from post title, and so it is not so flexible and you have no control over the file name you want. It omits common words like "a/an/the" and it concatenates the first 6 or 7 words separating each word with hyphen. So sometimes good keywords may be missed out. If you change the title, the file name changes too.
But according to some SEO tips, it's better to have keywords in both titles and filenames too. If that is true, for example in my 18yr old Mayor post, the file name won't be favoured by SE's. Wouldn't it be great if we could remove unnecessary words such as "a/an/the/for/but" etc and include more relevant keywords while leaving the title more meaningful as well as keywords-oriented? A little bit of SE ranking will surely make a difference in your blog popularity.
Thanks to Amit Agarwal's Hack and w.bloggar, I have more control over the file name and title now. The beauty of w.bloggar is it updates the title without touching the filenames. So you can change titles without worrying about having broken links with SE's or other people who linked you previously.
Here are the complete steps for the hack. 1. Compose your Blogger article with a title containing all the keywords (6 is the limit) and in the right order (e.g. X1 Yahoo Desktop Search)
2. Publish your post on Blogger.
3. Now open the post in w.bloggar, an offline blog editing tool, and change the page title to something more meaningful (e.g. Yahoo! Desktop Search getting closer to X1)
4. Click "Post & Publish". Congratulations! Your permalink filename is what you want it to be and no longer defined by Blogger.
I love w.bloggar!!! You can see that the title of this post and filename are different.
I have always been a fan of Chitika eMiniMalls and now that they have updated it for channel reporting and other great changes, I welcome the new Chitika with full support. But we need to use all of the features efficiently to reap all the benefits it offers. Here are some of the tips and tricks I use with Chitika and I hope they will be useful for you too whether you are blogging just for fun or money. But who wouldn’t love it if they can earn some money while you’re blogging for your enjoyment?
If you are not familiar with Chitika and don’t know what it is, it’s some kind of advertising to your visitors on your blog. You earn some money when the visitors click on the ads. Just a click isn’t worth a lot but if you receive a lot of traffic, it may be something for you. Click Here if you want to open an account with Chitika eMiniMalls.
1. Using Chitika and Google Adsense Together
Although Chitika can be contextual or non-contextual depending on your choice, Adsense can only be contextual meaning that Adsense ads will be something related to the contents of your blog. Google doesn’t allow any other contextual ads to be placed on the same page as Adsense. So if you want to use Chitika and Adsense together, you need to make Chitika non-contextual.
Here is how to do use Chitika and Adsense together
ch_non_contextual = 1;
Place this line inside the Chitika code before the “mm.js” line. ‘1’ means non-contextual and ‘0’ is contextual.
2. Changing colours of Text, Background and Border Colours
This can be done from Chitika code configuration page. It’s highly recommended that you use it. Many bloggers believe borderless ad with white background is the most effective one if your site’s background is white. Try to make it look like it’s a part of your blog instead of an ad. Make the text and title same format as the way you did in the content. You’ll be more successful.
This is how to change formats for Chitika Text & Title
ch_font_text = “Arial Narrow, Comic Sans MS”;
ch_font_title = “Arial, Verdana”;
Place those codes in the Chitika code to change the format and change the font types to whatever is suitable for you. The second type is selected when the first is not available. So it’s good to have a back up type.
3. Choosing Products/Keywords to show up in Chitika
There are so many categories to choose in Chitika eMiniMalls(click here for complete categories). By choosing the right products to show up to your readers will get you far. Choose something related to your blog if possible. After that, choose something which is hot in the market and might look appealing to your audience.
Rotating keywords and using a new set after some time is a good idea too to avoid from ad-blindness.
4. What if you want Chitika Contextual Ads?
Sometimes, you should use contextual Chitika rather than non-contextual (assuming that you’re not using Adsense at all in your blog). You don’t want to advertise Canon products when your particular post is about Sony. If audience sees the relevant ad just after or while they read about a product, they will be more likely to click on the ad, especially when they become hooked after reading.
Here is how to place a product related to the title in Chitika
Replace
var ch_queries = new Array( “ipod”, “xbox);
var ch_selected=Math.floor((Math.random()*ch_queries.length));
ch_query = ch_queries[ch_selected];
with
ch_query = ‘<$MTEntryTitle$>‘; (if you’re using MT)
or
ch_query = ‘<?php the_title();?>’; (if you’re using WordPress)
or
ch_query = "<$BlogItemTitle$>"; (for Blogger)
Visit my demo site for some examples. Note you do not need to worry about inserting ch_non_contextual = 1; in this case, although it won’t make any difference even if you do.
5. About Chitika tabs
Before, people used to worry about using Chitika search tab and Google search on the same page. But Google has clarified that it’s totally fine. If you do not want to include the Chitika search tab, you can include ch_nosearch = 1 ; in the codes, alternately you can select it from the Chitika configuration page when you generate the code.
By default, the default tab of Chitika is “Description”. You can change it to “Best Deals”, “Search” or “Reviews” too.
Here is how to customise Chitika tabs
(Note: Use only one & use the exact case that appear on Chitika)
ch_default_tab = “Best Deals”; (note “Best Deals” not just “Deals”)
ch_default_tab = “Search”;
ch_default_tab = “Descriptions”;
ch_default_tab = “Reviews”; (it may not work if there is no review for the product)
(note if you use different case, there will be a duplicate of the tab)
6. Channel Reporting
Now you can see which Chitika ad is performing better than the other by using channels.
Here is how to set channel reporting.
ch_sid = ‘xxxx’;
Replace xxxx with a short description you want and insert it in the Chitika Ad code. (eg. 'Sidebar at main page'. Thus you can check the stats for that channel in Chitika report.
7. Chitika Alternate Ad
As I posted about Chitika's Audit, you will not get paid for clicks from invalid countries such as China & many Asian countries, etc. So for visitors from invalid IPs, you might be better off to replace Chitika with different ads that will probably pay you.
Here is how to alternate ad with Chitika
If you're creating new Chitika codes, you can set the alternate ad at Chitika. For your existing eMiniMalls, you can add the following line to the code (anywhere after the line with ch_client but before the line with /script). You need to replace the XXXX with a valid URL like "http://yourdomain.com/alternateAd.html".
ch_alternate_ad_url = "XXXX";
The replacement Ad should be same size as the actual Chitika Ad, otherwise it will be cropped out.
8. Use the helping hands of your affiliate
You can recommend others to join Chitika if they haven't. When they join and start earning, you'll receive 10% of what your affiliates earn in the next 12 months, without taking a cent from what your affilliates earn. It may not be a lot but I'm sure most people will be happy to be your affiliates if you introduced them to Chitika and give suggestions, especially when they won't lose a cent from their shares regardless of whether they are your affiliates or not. It's just a matter of helping each other.
Happy blogging!!!
Note: URLs to Chitika in this post are affiliate links. If you sign up by using those links, and I'll be rewarded with some commission. However, you will not lose a cent from what you should earn at all. It's paid by Chitika for advertising Chitika eMiniMalls.

Technorati Tags chitika tips blog
A few weeks ago, I found a tool at Business Opportunities Blog powered by Technorati to calculate how much your blog is worth. Many bloggers have been quite excited to check their blogs' worth. So I wondered what's so exciting about it and gave a try to check some big bloggers
Hmm, the Problogger receives 20,000+ unique visits every day and it's Alexa rank is 9471 when I'm writing this.
So I tried Google.com and here is the result.
I think the results are very ridiculous. I would have been happy to pay a lot more than that (since google is a multi-billion dollar bussiness now) for both sites. Checking how much a web site is worth is not as simple as a click of a button. Even two sites receiving the same monthly traffic may not be worth equally. Neither can links alone approximate the price.
So my conclusion is there is nothing to be thrilled about this tool. It can't give any figure no where near true worth in most cases. It's just another fun game.
Since I started blogging here, I tried to search for blog & RSS directories where I can list my blog. Fortunately thanks to aripaparo.com , I found the list of many blog directories. But since the original author of the blog hasn't been able to update the list for a while, some links are no longer active and some need difffernt links to join. So I have tested, updated the list, and added some I found too. I hope it will help many people.
If you have some info about good blog directories I missed, or broken links in this link, please feel free to contact me.
