In the past few months, there has been one hot innovative and creative marketing idea from a UK guy called Alex Tew. His idea is to sell the space on his homepage (total 1 million pixels) for a dollar a pixel, but minimum purchase must be $100, as you know anything less than that size is hardly noticeable. The money will fund his education.
It may sound funny and impossible. But he is one serious guy and he proved that it's not only possible but also successful by selling 50% of it in only two months. Wow!!! $500k in two months. Have a look at the screen shot of his homepage. You can visit The Million Dollar Homepage here.
He and his site has been very popular since then and he received media attention too, such as inviewed by BBC, etc. No doubt that there are a lot of copycats as well. About 500 sites so far. Some tweak the main idea a bit and sell like a brick or a cricket, etc. The original concept is Alex Tew's. There are a few sites that are honest and give credit to Alex. But many sites are just not cool at all. They copy the style, graphics, and pretend that it's their own idea. http://www.fivemilliondollarhomepage.com is one such example. She copied everything, and couldn't even create a banner relevant to the site name. Well we'll see how far she can go. Internet community does not accept such dishonest people.
Congradulations to Alex Tew and I am sure you'll be able to sell all the remaining pixels in no time. I would like to see more innovative ideas from you in the future. Here is the status of Alex's pixels and it's updated everytime pixels are sold.
I hope you like his idea as much as I do. Thank you for reading.
